Ways To Speed
Up Your Computer
It can be extremely frustrating when you have to struggle with
a slow computer. It is very annoying and causes you to be less
productive, stopping you from proceeding with other tasks.
Instead of putting up with a slow computer, it is well worth
using one or all of the simple ways to speed up your computer.
You don't have to spend a lot of money or need to know a lot of
technical information to do it.
De-Fragmentation
One of the most effective ways to speed up your computer is to
de-fragment the drives. The de-fragmentation tool is found in
accessories, under programs in the start menu. In accessories,
you will see system tools, one of which is the de-fragmentation
tool. After the process begins, the computer can be used but it
will not perform well while the de-fragmentation is happening.
It is best to do this when you would not be using the computer
and let it get on with it. The whole procedure takes a few
hours.
Spyware Removal
You may not even be aware of its presence but spyware can have
a great effect on your computer's speed and performance. There
are other clues that there is spyware, such as internet
manipulation and pop ups, unwanted websites appearing, as well
as the slowing down of the system. Use one of the many spyware
removal programs described on this website to get rid of
spyware fast, it is one of the easiest ways to speed up your
computer.
Delete Temporary
Files
It may surprise you to know that temporary files slow down the
speed at which your computer runs. It is a simple way to speed
up your computer. You may be familiar with the folders where
temporary files are saved and so navigate to them and delete.
Do this when there are no programs running, which may need the
files. To find temporary files anywhere on your hard drive, go
to start, search, files and folders, all files and folders,
type in the following exactly (or copy and
paste):
*.tmp,*.chk,~*.*
Select all the drives and click the search subfolders option,
under “More Advanced Options”. In Windows 98, there is a
folder, C:WindowsTemp, which holds temporary
files.
Eliminate Unused
Programs
This is another of the common ways to speed up your computer,
Use Add or Remove Programs within the Control Panel. Most
people have a few unused programs on their computer, which
seemed like a good idea when installed but then were never put
to any use.
Allow Automatic Updates
Fixes for bugs in Windows are developed often and
installing the automatic updates from Microsoft will keep the
computer optimized. Go to the Start Menu then Control Panel
> Automatic Updates.
ReBoot the PC
If your computer has been on for months and constantly running
for a long time then the system may be cluttered up with items,
which would be eliminated or better organized if you restarted
the computer.
Limit the Number of Programs Running
You may be trying to do many things at the same time but too
many applications on at once can hinder the speed of any of
them. It may not be really necessary to have so many open
simultaneously.
Use the System Tools
There are three main tools to help you optimize the smooth
running of Windows. They can be found within the Start Menu at
All Programs > Accessories > System Tools. There is a
Disk Defragmenter, which organizes the hard drive better so it
can run faster. Also useful, is Disk Cleanup, which is used to
get rid of unneeded files, such as temporary files or those in
the recycle bin. Finally, it is recommended to use the Error
Checking application from time to time. It scans the hard disk
and looks for faults. To run it, right click the drive and
select, "Check Now".
